Five things decide a front bike light, and the first one is almost never on the front of the box. Runtime at maximum output is what tells you whether the light covers the dark part of your ride, and it is a different number from the runtime the brand advertises. The advertised figure is usually the lowest flashing mode, which can be fifty times longer. Second is the maximum output itself, which matters less than people think once you are above roughly 600 lumens on unlit roads. Third is the ingress rating, where the difference between IP67 and IPX6 is a dust rating nobody mentions. Fourth is weight, since this hangs off a handlebar and the spread here is 172 to 230 grams. Fifth is beam shape, because a round beam from a bright LED puts a lot of its output into the eyes of oncoming riders.

That is honest and it is also the shortest maximum runtime here by a distance, which tells you Boost is a burst for a descent or a dark underpass rather than a mode you ride in. The rest of the table is sensible, spanning 75 lumens up to 800 at 1:30, so the light works well if you treat 800 as your real maximum. The Travel Lock Out mode is a genuinely useful detail, since a light that switches itself on inside a bag is a well known way to arrive somewhere with a flat battery. There is no runtime published for 1400 lumens, or for any individual mode, anywhere on the page. For a light whose entire purpose is to work for a known number of hours in the dark, the omission is the specification. At 230 grams it is also the heaviest here by 40 grams.

So it is runtime against sealing. If your dark riding comes in stretches longer than about ninety minutes, the Magicshine is the answer and there is not much to argue about, because no amount of ingress rating helps a light that has gone out. If you ride gravel, winter roads with salt, or anything dusty, the Knog’s IP67 is protecting against the thing most likely to kill the light over a season, and 1.5 hours covers a normal commute twice over. Weight is a wash at 180 against 190 grams. Both publish their full mode tables, which is the reason both are recommendable at all.

Questions, answered

Why do bike lights advertise two numbers that contradict each other?

Because both are true in isolation and neither is true at the same time as the other. The lumen figure is the maximum the LED will produce. The runtime figure is almost always the lowest flashing mode, which may be a tenth or a twentieth of that output. Lezyne's page here is the clearest example, headlining 1400 lumens and a 300-hour maximum runtime in Femto mode. Both are accurate. Together they describe a light that does not exist.

How long should a light last at full output?

Between one and two hours is normal for a light in the 1200 to 1600 lumen class, because that output draws a lot of current from a battery of roughly 5000 mAh. In this comparison the spread was 55 minutes to 2 hours 12 minutes, which is a factor of more than two between lights that look equivalent on the box. If a brand does not publish the figure, assume it sits at the low end of that range.

Do I actually need 1400 lumens?

On unlit roads and trails, yes, and you will still spend most of the ride in a lower mode. On lit urban streets, no. Around 300 to 600 lumens is plenty to see by where there is street lighting, and going brighter mostly dazzles oncoming people. The reason to buy a high maximum is having it available for the dark sections, which is exactly why the runtime at that maximum is the number that matters.

What does the IP rating actually cover?

Two digits, and most bike lights only publish the second. The first digit is dust and the second is water, so IP67 means fully dust tight and able to survive temporary immersion. IPX6 and IPX7 have an X for the dust digit, meaning no dust rating was claimed at all. Only one light in this comparison publishes both digits at their highest, which is worth knowing if you ride gravel or in winter salt.

Is a round beam a problem?

On shared paths and roads, yes. A round beam from a powerful LED throws as much light upward as forward, so a large part of your output goes into the eyes of people coming toward you and does nothing for the road. Lights designed for road use shape the beam with a flat top or a cutoff. None of the lights here publish a cutoff, so all four need careful aiming, and the dual-LED designs need it most.
